The O’Dowd women’s lacrosse team played longtime rival Piedmont High School in the Western Alameda County Conference Championship (WACC) game on May 5. It was sure to be an exciting game from the beginning, for their regular season game versus Piedmont ended in a 5-4 loss for the Dragons.

The Dragons however came back hungry for a victory over their longtime foes. The first half of the game went back and forth in the scoring, resulting in a 6-6 tie at halftime. The 3rd quarter of the game was all O’Dowd as the Dragons went up 3 goals, leading 9-6 with 12 minutes left to play. But the Highlanders were not done, and in the 4th quarter responded with 3 goals of their own tying the game at 9-9 with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Then the Dragons NCAA Division I recruit Mariana Alvear ’17 turned on beast mode driving towards the crease earning a shooting space call and a free position shot for the Dragons. As the whistle blew Mariana buried the shot with ease right between the goalie’s legs putting the Dragons up 10-9 and securing the WACC Championship.

There were some spectacular individual efforts throughout the game including goalie Colleen Cushing ’19 making 6 critical saves towards the end of the game to keep a win in reach for the Dragons. Rachel DeLuca ’18,  who was responsible for 4 out of the Dragons’ 10 goals, was a strong force throughout the game. Maddy Caine ’18 had a dominant night in the draw circle and won in key situations. Marie-Claire Lamoureaux ‘ ’18 caused multiple turnovers and sprinted down field on one of those for a goal. We also cannot forget about the three amazing freshmen who have played a key role in the team’s success the entire season – Annika Ditzler, Lizzy Firestone and Lauren Wheeler.
