More than 60 family members, friends and teammates of O’Dowd track star Tierra Robinson-Jones ’18 gathered in the Center for Environmental Studies on August 5 to celebrate her accomplishments and bid her farewell as she heads to Texas A&M University on an athletic scholarship.
A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of a Proclamation from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, presented by Austin Carrington Scott ’14 – Director of Youth Communications for the mayor, which recognized Robinson-Jones’ success as an Oakland student-athlete and declared Sunday, August 5, 2018, as “Tierra Robinson-Jones Day in Oakland.”
“Excelling in both the classroom and on the track, Tierra is a shining example of an amazing student-athlete that has come from our great city,” reads the proclamation.
Robinson-Jones ’18 became the first Northern California girl in state history to win the 200- and 400-meter dashes in the same state championship at the CIF State Track & Field Championships held at Buchanan High School in Clovis June 1-2.
Her personal best time of 52.37 seconds in the 400 ranked her as the No. 2 high school girl’s time in the country this season for the event. She clocked in at 23.66 in the 200 – another personal best.
In June, Tierra Robinson-Jones’ 18 became the first student-athlete from O’Dowd to be named the Gatorade California Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. This award recognizes athletic excellence as well as high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track.
At Sunday’s celebration, 2012 and 2013 Gatorade California Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year Sasha Wallace, an alumnus of Castro Valley High and the University of Oregon who now competes internationally, was a guest speaker.
