Solidarity in Action Group Shares Advocacy Work With Peace & Justice Students

Seniors in Solidarity in Action (SIA) presented about their legislative advocacy work in Peace & Justice classes on May 10. This session was part of the “Taking Action” unit in Peace & Justice. SIA students shared their experiences of advocacy with the Mayor of Oakland, Representative Barbara Lee, and Senator Dianne Feinstein. They reported back on their trip with Ignatian Family Teach-In where they were able to advocate on a wide variety of social justice topics with elected representatives in Washington, DC. The SIA students also held mock advocacy sessions where they played legislative staffers and Peace & Justice students organized into lobbying groups with roles such as facilitator, evidence chief, and personal story teller. It was a fruitful collaboration between the two groups.
