Roar: Fall 2019 Dragon Athletics Season in Review

The Fall season was filled with countless great moments and achievements for several Dragon teams and individuals. As always, we are grateful to our coaches, athletes, and families for all of the ways you support our community and Dragon athletics. We want to share a special thank you to former parent Dennis Mockel for his tremendous contributions to team photography over the years and alum Stephen Woo for his images of Women’s tennis action shots.


Fall Signing Day

Congrats to our senior student athletes, their families, and coaches on a terrific Fall Signing Day: Monty Bowser (Cal Basketball), Kira Junge (Columbia Rowing), Alejandra Melendez (University of Montana Soccer) and Gabriela Twitchell (University of Portland Rowing). Mark your calendars for upcoming signing days: December 18, February 5, and April 22.


Cheerleading

Varsity Cheer competed in Stockton this fall in both Sideline Cheer and Show Cheer where they placed first, earning their ticket to attend the National Championships in February. They will compete among the best as they travel to Las Vegas for the National Championships.


Cross Country

The Cross Country team fielded a team of 60+ runners across the three levels (Frosh/Soph, JV and Varsity) this year with a competitive schedule that included traveling to Sacramento and Clovis for overnight trips. League competition included the O’Dowd men winning the WACC league championship led by senior Julian Jensen who was undefeated in league competition. Both Varsity Men’s and Women’s teams will compete in the NCS Championships Saturday, November 23 at Hayward High School. Women’s Division 4 race starts at 10:30am and Men’s Division 4 race starts at 12:00pm. Both teams are ranked third and must place in the top three to earn their ticket to the State Championships to be held at Woodward Park in Fresno Saturday, November 30.

Golf

Women’s Golf competed well in WACC league competition with Mary Lee qualifying for the NCS championship. After changes due to fire in the North Bay, Mary, who is in her sophomore year, competed well, placing in the middle of a competitive field in NCS competition.

Football

The Varsity Football team ended the season 3-7 and 3-2 in league competition with wins against WACC opponents Piedmont, Berkeley, and Castro Valley High Schools. The Dragons battled hard in the WACC Championship against Encinal High school, narrowly losing 10-7. Coach Kaufman thanked the players for their hard work and dedication throughout his career at O’Dowd and announced that he will be moving on to continue to guide his ministry and spend time with his family.

Women’s Tennis

Women’s Tennis fielded a strong multi-level program. Mid-season the Varsity team had a historic win against Piedmont High School (Piedmont’s first loss in league since the league’s inception). The Dragons advanced to NCS in singles and doubles tennis represented by Georgia Bunkers, Hayden Senegal ‘21, Lauryn Davis, Ava Murphy and Evian Jiang.

Women’s Volleyball

The Dragons were undefeated in WACC league competition and advanced to the NCS playoffs. They had a commanding win over Campolindo High School for the NCS Division 1 championship, winning for the third consecutive year. They then advanced through the NorCal playoffs where they ultimately faced Marin Catholic in the open division NorCal championship game losing 3-0 and finishing the season as a Top 4 team in California.

Water Polo

O’Dowd placed second in league competition losing a tough match to the WACC champions Berkeley High. Both Varsity Women’s and Men’s teams advanced to the NCS playoffs. The women played Newark Memorial losing in the first round 8-2. The men advanced to the second round losing to Alhambra High School.
