OAKLAND — At first glance, Elle Woods, the lead character in the musical “Legally Blonde,” seems like the poster child for the stereotypical “dumb blonde.” A closer examination, however, reveals a smart young woman who defies expectations while managing to stay true to herself.

The unexpected depth of the storyline combined with the catchy music and lyrics might be one reason the film starring Reese Witherspoon and the subsequent Broadway run proved so successful.

Bishop O’Dowd Performing Arts teacher/director Dennis Kohles hopes his upcoming production of the popular musical will prove just as successful.

“Our students love the show. They grew up with the story and appreciate that it has strong women characters,” Kohles said. “It’s also a really fun story with a great musical score.”

Given the insecurities of high school life and how many teens are just beginning to find out who they are during those years, it’s easy to see how a musical dealing with similar issues would appeal.
