Originally from:
My family is from the East coast (New Jersey and Connecticut). Raised mostly in Corvallis and Eugene Oregon. As a child we moved around a lot, having lived in LA, Oxford England and Nijmegen, Neatherlands.
Why I Teach:
To empower students to work for justice. Also, teenagers are incredibly fun to work with.
Most powerful teaching technique:
I am a big fan of building in as much individual and small group instruction as possible; ideally, staying as focused on each student's individual needs as possible.
I like creating opportunities for students to have that ""A-ha"" moment when it all makes sense. "
Why are the subjects you teach important?:
Favorite quotes:
John 13:34, "I give you a new commandment, Love your neighbor as yourself, as I have loved you."
"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." Martin Luther King
Favorite trivia:
Recommended visual media:
Doctor Who, Marvel Movies, Kim's Convenience, Community, 30 Rock, SNL, Ted Lasso, Watchman, That Damn Micheal Che, This Week with John Oliver and Late Night with Stephen Colbert.
Recommended reads:
I really enjoy unwinding by reading science fiction and fantasy novels. Most recently I finished reading Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series and Genevieve Colman's Invisible Library series. Anything based in another culture interests me.
I enjoy historical graphic novels such as John Lewis's march series and Art Speigelman's Muas. Tattoos on the Heart by Greg Bolye is an amazing, inspirational read.
Hobbies or outside interests:
Hiking, biking, camping, stand-up-paddle barding, attending live comedy, exploring SF and Oakland, seeing local art, movies, and theater with my family.
